Fall is such a magical time, and yet it always feels a little too short. We’ve been waiting for months for that thermometer to finally go down, and now that it has started to budge, it’s time to take advantage! If you are looking for some help planning out this season, I have you covered! As a Des Moines family photographer, I love getting to work with my clients to make each season last for a lifetime. Here are the fall activities in Des Moines to add to your itinerary this year.

Applefest At Living History Farms is a unique space that lets you step back through the decades to see the rich stories that make Iowa the state it is today. Throughout their Applefest, you can see how apples were prepared in the past as you enjoy apple butter, cake, pie, and cider. They also have antique tractors as well as a historic baseball game.

Each year, the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden creates a festive environment to get you into the fall spirit! You can come out to see entertainment, try out some educational activities, and sample delicious food. The entire thing is family-friendly, and costumes are encouraged!

225 10th Street, Boone, Iowa 50036
The Pumpkin Express happens each year in October. During this celebration, you can head out with your family and take a train ride out to the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad’s pumpkin patch, where you can select your perfect pumpkin. The trip lasts around 1 hour and 15 minutes total and is ideal for all ages.
Des Moines, Iowa
Runners, get ready! The Des Moines Turkey Trot is returning for yet another year of fun. The race itself happens on Thanksgiving morning at Court Avenue with a 5k run across the city. Once you are done, get ready for a post-party and some grub. There is also a Tot Trot that will happen at the 5K line after the official race is over.
