Kids love to learn through play. It’s just how they were wired. They don’t want to pay attention to lengthy curriculum; they can barely pay attention during storytime! They need an environment where they can explore and find out things for themselves. JouJou Des Moines gives them a way to do exactly that. This lovely space was curated to get out kids’ energy while engaging their imaginations. As a Des Moines family photographer, I spend a lot of time telling families about the resources I know they’ll love. Here’s why I think you should check out this place!
906 42nd Street, Des Moines, Iowa 50312
JouJou in Des Moines is a lovingly created play place designed just for families. With their thoughtful approach, it should probably come as no surprise that it was opened by two moms! During the early years of the COVID pandemic, Jenny (mom to 3 kids) and Amanda (mom of 2 kids) were trying to figure out how to handle their kids’ endless energy. They decided they were going to take a historic downtown space and convert it into 2,600 square feet of pure creative fun! That was in May of 2022. Now, three years into the endeavor, they have become a local favorite for parents with kids ages 5 and under. They offer daily playtimes with drop-in admission as well as monthly memberships.
JouJou Des Moines is a Montessori-inspired center for kids ages 4 months-5 years. If you’re new to the Montessori method, it’s actually pretty dang simple. As your child explores the space, you hang out with them and let them find the things that get them excited. You can answer questions, talk them through activities, and let their brains kick into high gear. They have a constant rotation of toys, so there is always something new each time you come in. The thing I really love about this space, however, is how much they also created it for parents. While you are watching your baby, you can grab local tea or coffee and catch up with a friend. Both you and your child will have plenty of opportunities to socialize!
JouJou Des Moines also offers specialized classes where your child will learn alongside others. Whether your family wants to work on crafts in a Mini Maker class or explore nature with their Muddy Boots session, they have just the thing to keep your child engaged!
With JouJou Des Moines, your child will be able to learn in the way that works best for them. If you have been looking for a space that will support your child’s development, you need to try it out ASAP!
